Shaun Gunnels On His New Music Project: “Southern Weather”

Back in July of 2017, I did an interview on a musical project by my friend Shaun Gunnels whom I’ve known since the early 2000’s when we both worked at the same retail store at Firewheel Mall. I grew up on his music as his local-turned-nation-wide band, “The Background” had some of the best pop-punk sounds around. Years later, he started up the solo project, “Dnvr Max” that I covered in my first article about him.

Today, I’d like to spend some time talking about where he’s channeling his creative talents to nowadays, his new band, “Southern Weather”.

It's been a while since the last article. Tell me a little bit about the Southern Weather Band and what caused you to make this creative transition.

Last time we talked I was doing my solo project and kinda just releasing music on the fly, which was fun, but left me with very little drive doing it all on my own. I missed being in a band. The brotherhood, the creativity, the arguing, all of it. *Laughs* I got an offer to just jam with a couple of dudes and within a week we had a few songs written and decided to invite a drummer and bass player into the mix.

When do you expect your band to release a full EP?

As far as an EP goes there really hasn’t been a discussion on a time frame for release, but we will be in the studio next week to track some, if not, all of it. We were really pleased with how the first two singles came to life and couldn’t be more excited to follow them up!

“My Favorite Song” was their first song released under their new band name and has been on almost every playlist I’ve made on Spotify since it debuted. I’m in love with the new sound which makes me even more excited to announce that Friday they released a lyrical video for their second song entitled, “Fences” which can be viewed below!

As Shaun said above, you can expect a full album soon. As a huge fan, (and from my perspective) as long as he’s making music, I’ll be listening and spreading it. To follow him and the rest of the band and to stay updated with new releases and upcoming shows, I’ll list some social links below and be sure to give them a listen on their Spotify artist page. Keep up the awesome work, Shaun!
